On September 10, 2013, Apple announced two new iPhones, the 5s and 5c. Since the announcement, we at TechInsights have been anxiously waiting for the opportunity to get our hands on the devices. Well that moment has finally arrived. Both iPhones are currently in house and the teardowns have begun. Stay tuned for teardown sequence photos, component identification and design wins, as well as estimated bill of materials.

A6 Processor
Apple has also used this iteration of the iPhone to introduce their latest processor, the much anticipated multi-core CPU and quad-core GPU A6 processor. There were many questions about this Apple custom-designed new processor - the most intriguing of which was the mystery behind the number of cores in the CPU and what type of cores are they. Would we be looking at a quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 implementation of the A6, or were we looking at a dual-core processor powered by ARM’s latest cores, the Cortex-A15? Apple has promised twice the performance of the A5 and twice the graphics capability.
