When Pat Gelsinger became Intel’s seventh CEO in early 2021, he brought a wealth of engineering and management talent along with experience both inside and outside of Intel. Gelsinger presented a plan to return Intel to its glory days by doubling down on AI, improving its processor designs, restoring its manufacturing leadership, and capitalizing on that leadership by building a foundry business. Given his big goals, improving process and processors wasn’t enough as the company’s revenue plunged. He’ll take the blame for Intel’s collapse, but most of the damage was already done before he started. The next CEO must take a different approach.
