Insight: Can Ideal Power Bring Balance to xEV Power Semiconductor Requirements?

Ideal Power is bringing its bidirectional bipolar junction transistor (B-TRAN) architecture to the power semiconductor space, promising to improve performance for systems that typically employ Si insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs). One obvious target is the electric vehicle powertrain where the need to improve performance/range and efficiency has opened the door to SiC and GaN power semiconductors. While these technologies provide tangible benefits at the system level, these benefits can come at a cost potentially limiting their applicability.
