2024 Automotive Software Survey: Key Results into a Rapidly Evolving Industry
The automotive world is undergoing a major shift, driven by the rise of software-defined vehicles, over-the-air (OTA) updates, and AI-powered innovations. The 2024 Automotive Software Survey, conducted by Aurora Labs in partnership with TechInsights, sheds light on how the industry is grappling with these rapid changes and evolving consumer expectations.
Here are some of the key findings:
- AI’s Growing Role in the Cabin: More respondents now view the in-cabin experience as the area where AI will have the most significant impact on the automotive industry.
- Challenges in Software Development: Globally, software complexity and hardware integration remain the biggest hurdles. For European respondents, organizational structures and processes are additional challenges.
- EV Owners Lead the Charge: EV owners are more willing to pay for downloadable features, have experienced more OTA updates, and are eager to adopt new technologies.
- Changing OTA Update Expectations: Over the last five years, fewer respondents expect frequent OTA updates (12+ annually), with most preferring two to six updates per year.
- Infotainment Evolution: Consumers are increasingly comfortable with new infotainment features being added in the background without requiring explicit opt-in.
- Persistent Development Challenges: Issues like traceability, 100% test coverage, and post-factory error debugging remain, but considering the growing complexity of vehicles, maintaining the status quo is a notable achievement.
- Tech over Performance for EV Owners: While non-EV owners prioritize performance and handling, EV owners place far greater importance on technology and connectivity.
