Unboxing the Vivo X Fold3 Pro

Vivo has included a complimentary phone cover with the X Fold3 Pro. The box also contains a 120-watt charging adapter, a USB-C cable, minimal documentation in the form of a two-page leaflet, and a calling card with a QR code.

Vivo has designed two models within the X Fold3 series, each featuring different generations of Qualcomm Snapdragon processors. The base and Pro models are further differentiated by their rear cameras, charging capacities, and biometric features.

Market Context and Design

Vivo aims to strengthen its position within the foldable smartphone market, where Samsung held a dominant 53% market share in 2023. In March of this year, Vivo introduced the X Fold3 product line as the thinnest foldable smartphones available. The base model X Fold3 is even thinner than the X Fold3 Pro. Our analysis confirms that with the X Fold3 Pro fully opened, it measures a maximum thickness of just 5.7 millimeters, nearly 40% thinner than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5.

Camera System

Under the rear camera's bigeye bezel lies the Zeiss co-engineered camera system. This setup includes a 64 MP periscopic telephoto camera above the 50 MP main camera, and a 50 MP ultra-wide camera to the right. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 AI image processing complements this system, alongside the Vivo V3 IC, a custom image signal processor.

Battery and Charging

The wireless charging coil in the X Fold3 Pro is a thin tape with an additional metal bracket for support. Notably, the coil covers the battery replacement pull tape, indicating that the wireless charging coil and its bracket must be removed before replacing the battery.

The Vivo X Fold3 Pro is powered by two 2850 mAh batteries. The battery beneath the rear camera system is physically smaller than the second one. Vivo utilizes Blue Battery technology, which involves a dual battery design with semi solid-state battery cells. Combined, these batteries provide a total capacity of 5700 mAh. Semi solid-state batteries offer higher energy density compared to traditional lithium-ion batteries, enabling lighter and thinner batteries that are ideal for the foldable smartphone form factor.

Additional Features

In total, the Vivo X Fold3 Pro houses five cameras, including the three rear cameras and two 32 MP cameras—one on the cover side and the other on the front display side. The device also supports Wi-Fi 6E, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, and a low latency high-definition audio codec in certain regions.

The second battery, located beneath the display, is larger than the first but shares the same 2850 mAh rating. The TechInsights battery team plans to verify the semi solid-state battery design in the coming weeks.
