Qualcomm SDR875 Converged RF Transceiver in Galaxy S24 Ultra
Qualcomm’s agreement with Samsung to supply the SDR875 Converged RF transceiver for top-tier high end phones like the Galaxy S24 Ultra indicates Qualcomm’s hold in that segment of the market while the mid-low tier market is controlled by MediaTek which is looking to expand its supply agreements with Samsung although not for their flagship Dimensity 9300 and 9400 series of chipsets. What exactly does the Qualcomm SDR875 Converged Transceiver actually unify? To answer that question let’s look back at the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra smartphone. Figure 1 presents a simplified block diagram of the RF system on the S23 Ultra. This handset was based on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 platform and featured an FR1 RF system consisting of multiple antennae interfacing two Qualcomm SDR735 RF transceivers via the RF front end. The 5G FR2 subsystem consisted of two Antenna in Package (AiP) modules containing the FR2 TX/RX front end die that converts RF to an intermediate frequency (IF) which is then routed to the Qualcomm SMR546 IF transceiver component for conversion to and from baseband. These FR1 and FR2 transceivers then interfaced to the X70 modem.
