Narrative: IDM and Foundry Sales, Capacity, Capex – Q4 2024
Discover key trends in automotive wafer capacity and capital expenditures in 2024. Explore how IDMs and foundries like TSMC, SMIC, Global Foundries, and Bosch are shaping the industry with shifts in production and investment strategies.
A sampling of integrated device manufacturers (IDMs) and foundries important to the automotive industry shows wafer capacity year-over-year remained flat on average in 2024 with IDM capacity falling 3% while Foundries grew capacity by 6%. All four foundries tracked increased wafer capacity with SMIC growing capacity by 9%, Global Foundries and UMC by 7%, and TSMC (the largest foundry) by 5%. Several IDMs have increased fab capacities in 2024 including Vishay (acquired Nexperia's Newport wafer fab in UK), STMicroelectronics, Microchip, Texas Instruments, Bosch, Renesas, Analog Devices, Intel, Rohm, onsemi, and Infineon. Capital expenditures for IDMs and foundries in 2024 dropped by 2%, continuing the trend downwards from 2023. Capex fell by over 30% at Global Foundries, onsemi, Microchip, Kioxia, Analog Devices, STMicroelectronics, and Vishay. Capex grew by over 30% at Bosch, Renesas, and Micron.
